THE DIGITAL SWITCHOVER...

Brief Introduction.

Digital Switchover is the period where the TV transmitter signals change from analogue to digital. Once the switchover is complete there will be no more analogue TV transmissions. Many people today are already receiving digital services via current methods (e.g. Satellite, Freeview, etc.). This page is designed to help the people who are currently only receiving analogue transmissions and to help them prepare for the Digital Switchover.

When Is It Going To Happen?

Digital Switchover is taking place area by area from now until 2012.
For London (Crystal Palace Transmitter) the switchover takes place during April 2012.
For Kent (Bluebell Hill Transmitter) the switchover takes place during July 2012.

The Benefits After The Digital Switchover.

The main benefit of digital TV broadcasts is the choice of a much wider selection of TV and Radio services in addition to BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The analogue broadcasts use wide amounts of bandwidth when transmitting. Digital technology uses far less bandwidth and is also capable of transmitting far more services within that bandwidth, thus eventually freeing up available bandwidth desperately needed for other services. There are many transmitter sites across the UK that are still incapable of transmitting digital broadcasts due to the lack of frequencies available. This is why the Digital Switchover is taking place so these areas can also enjoy the benefits of a wider choice of digital services using some of the frequencies available from the freed up bandwidth.
Other benefits of digital TV broadcasts are generally a much cleaner sound and picture, extra features like 'The Red Button' allowing you to view information from TV Listings, News, Weather & Sports to name a few.'The Red Button' also includes many other different functions depending on what channel you are viewing at the time.

Will I Need To Get A New TV?

Not if you don't want to. Your existing television set can receive digital signals with an existing aerial if it already has a digital receiver built into it. If your TV is compatible for digital reception it will usually display the 'Digital Tick Logo' or DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) on the set. Older TV sets are capable of receiving digital broadcasts through an existing aerial but you WILL need a 'Set Top Freeview Box' that connects up to your TV in order to process and receive the digital transmissions.
Skyview Aerials are currently selling a good selection of Freeview Boxes which are easy to use and are good value for money, Call Skyview Aerials Sales on - 01322 557510 for the latest deals.
There are other ways of receiving digital TV on your existing television set. One good option is to have Sky Digital installed. One of the benefits of having a digital satellite TV system installed is the extensive wide range of TV and Radio services that are available. A subscription fee is payable to the service provider (e.g. Sky).

I Live In Woolwich / Greenwich / Farningham. I Can Only Get TV Reception From The Local Mast. What Happens To Me?

Local 'Relay' masts are generally set up in locations where a steep hill (e.g. Shooter's Hill) blocks the airwaves from the Main Transmitter Mast (i.e. Crystal Palace). The TV signals from these 'Relay' masts will also be switching over from analogue to digital during April 2012. After the switchover these masts may still have restrictions regarding how many digital Freeview services can actually be transmitted in addition to BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 & (for the 1st time) Channel 5. After the switchover your existing television set and TV aerial will be able to receive digital signals from the local mast if it already has a digital receiver built into it. Older TV sets WILL need a 'Set Top Freeview Box' that connects up to your TV in order to process and receive the digital transmissions. There are other ways of receiving digital TV other than the local mast. One good option is to have Sky Digital installed. Will My TV Need Re-tuning?

Some television sets may need to be re-tuned manually after the switchover as some of the new frequencies may be different. Most newer TV sets have an automatic tuning function built in. If you get stuck or have difficulty with re-tuning your TV our Skyview Aerials engineers are always on hand...

Will The Digital Transmissions Be Stronger?

The Digital Switchover plan is to hopefully provide everyone with a good reliable coverage of Digital TV and Radio broadcasts, and some of the current weaker reception areas will generally receive an improved stronger boosted signal after the switchover period.
